Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood is bordered between Lincoln Square, Edgewater, and Lakeview, and it does not lack the beauty of any of these areas. Housing in the Uptown neighborhood historically consisted of great mansions and apartment buildings, which are now converted into rooming houses to provide residents with more affordable living. Many of these old dwellings have been restored to reproduce the neighborhood’s heritage. In order to assist moderate-income residents, the Chicago Department of Housing launched a program to establish affordable condominiums, in the mid $100k price range.
Uptown has long been considered Chicago’s center of entertainment. With countless clubs, theaters, and ballrooms, Uptown night-life offers the most enjoyable, exhilarating activities in the entire city. Arguable the most popular ballroom in America, the Aragon Ballroom, is still a frequented music venue by Uptown residents. Numerous big-name bands have been hosted at this location, including The Doors, The Grateful Dead, and the Rolling Stones. Jazz fans can witness the warm, glowing atmosphere of the historic Green Mill Jazz Club as they relax and listen to the tunes of both traditional and contemporary jazz. Other notable entertainment landmarks include the Riviera Theater, the Kinetic Playground, the Uptown Theatre, the Arcadia Ballroom, and the 5100 Club.
The neighborhood’s proximity to Lake Michigan gives residents the opportunity to partake in beachside activities such as volleyball, swimming, fishing, and boating, all just walking distance away.
As for restaurants, Uptown is home to a high concentration of Asian eateries. Many bakeries and restaurants with Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Laotian, French Vietnamese and Cambodian tastes are scattered around Broadway.
With over ten schools in the neighborhood, families won’t have to look far to find quality education for their children. Sufficient public, private, and parochial schools, and even three community colleges make Uptown a prime location for raising a family.
